The Food Pyramid for Strong Children’s Teeth

Bodybuilders often say that a strong body starts in the kitchen. This is also true for dental health. Choose these power foods for a healthy body and strong teeth.

Meat: Salmon, Chicken, Lean Beef
Meat is a good source of protein and phosphorous. Phosphorous helps build strong bones, allowing for a stronger jaw and teeth. If your family follows a vegetarian diet, try soy, beans, and quinoa.

Dairy: Cheese, Yogurt, Milk
Dairy is a good source of calcium, vitamin D, and phosphate which strengthen enamel, lower acidic content in the mouth and reduce the chance of cavities. For example, if a child was to eat potato chips, which break down into sugar, the acidic content of the mouth would be higher, resulting in a higher risk for cavities. Eating chips while sipping on a glass of milk would alleviate this problem.

Fruits: Oranges, Strawberries, Cantaloupe
Fruits that are high in vitamin C, such as oranges and lemons, help kill bacteria in the mouth and supply collagen to the gums. Collagen helps strengthen the gums, which are anchors for teeth. Too much fruit, however, can break down the enamel. Make sure to brush at least 30 minutes after eating acidic foods. Brushing with a mouthful of acid causes erosion of the teeth.

Vegetables: Peppers, Carrots, Celery
Vegetables are nature’s natural toothbrushes. The skin and rind scrape the plaque off of the teeth. This is also true for fruits like apples, which contain malic acid and help naturally whiten teeth.

Nuts: Almonds, Walnuts, Cashews
Nuts are a good source of healthy fats. These create a coating on the teeth which protects against acidity and sugars. Nuts also contain calcium, vitamin D and iron which help promote stronger teeth.
